At a loss for new blog ideas? It happens to everyone, and B2B companies in particular can struggle to come up with new ideas after blogging about all the keywords they can think of. You don’t want to start repeating yourself, of course – Google frowns on content that cover the same topics over and over – but how do you come up with original ideas now?
We’re sharing some of our favorite innovative methods to create new blog ideas when it feels like the well is running dry. Take a look and see what works for you!
Search for Your Industry on Quora
This is one of our favorite tricks: Quora is a question-and-answer site that’s great for more professional topics. Answers vary tremendously based on the people answering them and their motives, but the questions themselves are one of the most valuable parts of the platform. Search for your industry and related topics on Quora, and see what interesting questions people are asking. Pick a question you feel confident answering, and create a blog post about it! You can also paste this answer on Quora to improve your Quora profile and related SEO.
Follow Industry Magazines for News
Every industry has a magazine, journal, trade newsletter or other publication that you can find online. Sign up for these publications so you receive emails or alerts for the latest news and rumors. This should give you continual fodder for new topics to write about. For a more casual – but still effective – approach, you could create Google Alerts for general industry terms, and Google will send you emails every day collecting the latest news on those topics.
Look at Competitor FAQs
This is an easy and informative practice: Make a list of competitor websites and search them for FAQs – frequently asked questions that they are trying to answer for customers. Note any questions that you haven’t thought of yet, or that strike you as good examples of questions that deserve longer, better answers. They devote blog posts to answering those questions!
Search Through Past Customers for Case Studies
Review your business activity for the past year or so, paying close attention to successful, completed projects. These are ideal choices for case studies, blogs where you specifically talk about a problem and how your business solved that problem. Case studies work well if you can get into contact with the customer for a quick interview, but this isn’t necessary for creating the blog post!
Conduct a Local Interview
Speaking of interviews, another successful option for B2B companies is to interview a local company, customer or leader that’s connected to your industry. Talk about them, and get their perspective on your business area. This can help encourage new traffic to your blog as well as give you new content to publish on a long-term basis. The more related the interview is to your brand, the better, but a direct connection isn’t always required.
Review a Book, Guide, or Podcast
Have you been consuming any media related to your industry lately? Where it’s a book, a podcast, or anything in between, consider reviewing it for your blog. This doesn’t have to be an in-depth review, but a good blog post can still explore the content, talk about how well the topics are covered, and recommend the piece to others.
Do a Blog Trend Search
If you haven’t tried it yet, use a tool like BuzzSumo to search for what content is trending for a particular keyword. It’s a great way to see what has performed well in the past, and how you can take advantage of that by talking about a similar topic. You shouldn’t try to copy what others have done, but these tools are a great way to get inspired when you need more post ideas fast.
Take a Popular Post and Write an Opinion
On your hunt for popular posts related to your brand, consider writing an opinion piece of the most popular posts to create original content of your own. For example, if a national magazine in your industry recently published an article you disagree with, you could write a post about the article and why you have a different take.
Try Product and Material Biographies
How are your products made? What about the materials used to make them? Why are those particular materials chosen, and where do they come from? Little product biographies like these can give customers a better idea about your business and the quality of your product, in addition to providing an interesting look deeper into your industry.
Showcase a Communication Tool
Is there a particular communication tool that you have had excellent results with? Maybe email, a chat tool, texting, a forum, or a social media tool that you didn’t expect to be so useful? Take the time to write about it and talk about why you like it so much. This encourages readers to use those tools and provides helpful information for your partners.
Create a SAQ
An SAQ is a “Should Ask Question” (it’s one of the blog types in this excellent infographic on creating new posts), or a question that you think customers should ask, but very few do. This empowers and informs your customers, and makes for an excellent blog post if you can come up with questions like this. Don’t forget to explain why it’s important!
Talk About Your Plans
Do you have plans for the future? Areas you’d like to expand to, new products or services to offer, ways that you would like to change or grow? Talk about them! Write a blog post about your plans so people can see what you’re passionate about and where your company is headed.
